John Smith Boner Shit

A post or so ago I commented on how Holland has been getting it done in a major way. My only concern is that Van and them might be a couple years ahead of Reno, or rather Reno may be a couple years behind them. Either way it leaves those in the know in a pretty sweet position. You get to see all these national acts who are really doing it up right now, without having to cross the pass every week or so, and you get to enjoy music without the constant annoyance of Large City Folk and their obsession with over-priced necessity clothing.(Not just musically, but Pocahuanted/Psychic Reality are on the very tip of a next-level arts/culture movement mark my words). In fact I may have to suggest this band more for the artists than for people who absolutely love a song. This is more about creating something....living...highly contextual I s'pose.....I feel this shit is gonna be absolutely mind bending live. Definitely an occasion to get you pH levels all perfect and sit crossed legged(indian style) on the floor and let yourself get consumed. Well at least that's what I intend on doing.
Anyways Swahili(reno's own purveyors of this general ilk) will be playing their last show as Renoites before they set their sights for far more greener pastures(literally. figuratively-to be determined) up in Portland.

Wow this is long winded-fuck it, come out to the damn show, if only for the fact that you can experience something sooo totally over your head.

A Chump and Hoagie going Buck Wild

Is it a page ripped directly from the Harmony Korine handbook? Yes. Is it highly exploitative? Uh-huh. Does it make you feel like you accidentally swallowed a bone? On occasion. Is it even any good? Well that is up to you. I personally love it, and since I just watched a couple of hours of television I can tell you for a FACT that there is faaaaaar shittier things that have been made in this world, for a whole lot more money even.

-anyone who finds senseless violence against animals to be highly offensive, and of extreme poor taste might as well save themselves the trouble and resign to hating this film with a passion

Wipe Me Down

I will follow Kool Keith just about anywhere....shit even Mr. Nogatco had its moments....this shit right hurrr though, I just don't know. Im sure if I watched It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia I might know what the fuck this was all about....but still, I wouldn't

Spring Clanging

As a self-identified "Barbarian clawing at the walls of Western Civilization" I naturally am fully supportive of Piracy and Pilfering. Duh. However, that doesn't mean I don't think KAPITALIZM can be a uesful tool here and there. But honestly, most of the bands getting bummed out over the illegal availability of their music need to sack the fuck up and make better music. If anything the whole internet has re-introduced a realness or sincerity to an industry(when did music become industry?)that was lacking both. With music being so available, whenever you buy some it means a whole lot more. Nowadays I buy music as a sign of respect, and to align myself with things that I feel are important. Yeah it's a bummer that your shit could get leaked the weekend before and you can see you record sales disappear-BUT! It should make musicians feel all the more stoked when those same people STILL buy their record. Anyways that's the way I see it.

I've gotten a whooole lottta music the free-way, but this year I've tried to get back on my vinyl game, and I will directly attribute that to the kind of exposure the internet can offer.

My pick for SINGLE OF THE YEAR. Just that perfect nexus of shit that people nowadays wanna hear(i.e Twee-ish, jangly, Three-part harmonies.....yaddayaddayadda). Myself definitely included. PLUS you've got a Roky Erickson B-side. That is ON-POINT!!! I guess this is a fairly hip record, butt fuck it. Captured Tracks is one solid ass label.

Seeing Ian Svenonious in the flesh was definitely a highlight in my career as a punk. This record is so on-point and relevant, and seeing these songs live was tight. I had to wonder what people thought of it who didn't know what to expect. Preaching about reparations and spilling the beans on Government orchestrated assassinations can really go either way as far a crowd receptiveness. Chain and the Gang pulled it off, good for them and you too. Down With The Liberty

I must give props to The Holland Project for setting up some righteous ass shows so far this year. I can foresee Rainshadow being a very cool and important part of Reno. If my teachers taught skateboarding and sang for hardcore bands, and I could go watch the latest Captured Tracks artist in the front room of my high school, I just might've stuck around for all four years....not likely, but it wouldn't have hurt. But anyways Grass Widow was off the richter, you should probably already know....

These dudes opened up for Chain and The Gang, I didn't see the whole set but what I saw really impressed me. I never saw them before so I can't say for sure, but the guitarist from Mika Miko totally made them more interesting.

RAH! RAH! This is some super stoney shit. Reverb-drenched sassy, loosey-goosey funky ass soul typed chit. Downloaded this last year, and when I went vinyl-hunting in the bay this February this was one of my most sought. Super stoked I got it too.....the best bars would have dj's who played this and kept the lights down low. Anyone looking to hire?

I really wanted to hate on this band. But I can't. They are fucking rad, and every move they made last year they continued on ruling. At first I thought that they were a fluke until this EP came out, and they proved they had some depth. Their live performance floating around the internet kind of solidified their goodness for me. But that song Higher than the Stars fucking does it for me, and especially the Saint Etienne remix, makes me wish people did as many Quaaludes as they say they they did back in the day...

Now if only my Best Coast seven inch would arrive, and all these assholes would stop picking up five million copies and selling them on ebay for a hundred times the cover price. ARGH!!!

got these grand visions..

jupiter conjunct neptune - feb 2009-march 2010
this means were at the end and at the most manifested time, or "sunset effect"..

..fertile imagination with outlets in art, music, philosophy, and religion. extreme sensitivity where emotional or psychic proclivities are concerned. flights of religious ecstasy and mystical absorptions into the astral realms are characteristic, often giving rise to involvement in mystical cults and psychic forms of religion...extreme idealism. ..may lose contact with reality and live in a world of private fantasy, well-meaning, but often promise more than they can deliver..

Dejenga Elo AKA Barefoot Shrubs

Dejenga Elo/Barefoot Shrubs

My homebro Cory Alan Fry repping Orange County California is one of the more righteous dudes I've met. He is in TableFuit/Bobby Nobbit, some straight loc's affiliated with richbitch records. Met these dudes last summer during Outsleazed, and we hit it off like crazy, kindred spirits type of thing. Maybe it's because they were on a crazy Boom Binge, and I am pretty fluent in "Far-out-aneese". Anyways my dude makes music on his own as well. If you are familliar with all the nuttiness LA has been churning out as far as Left-field Hip-Hop goes then you should know what to expect. On a real
Lucky Dragons vibe, but it's not throw-away. Anywho, these are some demo tracks that he sent me, and Ive been sitting on for a good month, but here you go! Enjoy! If you ever get the chance to see Table Fruit(which might not be possible anymore...not sure) I'd do it because they're sick as hell. And if you ever meet Cory break him off a piece of whatever your chewin on.

Breaking Thine Law

Dream Deceivers (1990)

This is a really great KNPB-produced PBS documentary about a teen suicide pact made over Judas Priest in Reno in 1985 with one of the two kids, James Vance, unfortunately surviving a twelve-gauge blast to his head and the following absurd and frivolous lawsuit over supposed subliminal messages in the music. This happened in the suburban neighborhood we nicknamed America, where our old band practiced, where Jake and Ryan were jumped and stabbed a minute back, and where Miles and the Lundahls live. Perhaps a hex was cast on olde Black Forest Lane. This story is nearly as outrageous as a Reno 911 plotline, but as if shot from the other side of the law; the disaffected and alienated teenagers in Reagan America. Look out for what happens in a town preoccupied in the tourist and adult industry, a county with the highest heavy drinking rate in the nation, and within a state last in education and concerned with gambling on the future of Nevada. Is it clear yet why all of the bands here sound like Nirvana or Pantera?

Also worth noting:
-The influence of this movie for Harmony Korine on Gummo. He's mentioned it as a favorite, and his dad was a filmmaker for PBS in Nashville.
-Vance's lawyers office is shown, and is now a Church of Christ right across the street from us on Sinclair, very arguably an 'infamous' epicenter of metal, punk, and skateboarding in Reno.
-The kid playing guitar in the window sill and the metal fans at Frederic de LongChamps' beautifully designed Washoe County Courthouse as Priest rolls up. Dope.
